LEGACY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES – PROGRESS UPDATE JUNE 2008

NORTH WEST BASED PROJECTS

PLegacy development programme activitiesroject (A1.1) The Mini Squash Wall Project, Primary Schools Coaching and Mini Squash Festivals

To date, 21 schools out of the identified 45 have taken part in the Manchester Squash Development Legacy Programme, all of whom have received 5 weeks coaching and taken part in a schools competition. The development activity for a further 26 schools has started, but the majority of this will be delivered in the new school term in September. Every one of the 45 schools have received Mini Squash walls to facilitate long term programme delivery at school sites. Further competitions have been scheduled to take place week commencing 7th July with the grand finals taking place at the National Squash Centre on 16th July.


Project (A1.2) Mini Squash Leaders courses

Two Mini Squash Leaders courses have taken place (11th and 28th May) linking with the Manchester Squash Development programme. 19 Young Leaders have been trained and are assisting in the delivery of the programmes that support the Mini Squash Wall project.

Project (B1) North West Secondary Schools Championships

All planning for this event is completed and entry forms have been distributed to schools in the North West Region. The competition is for boys and girls in under 15 and under 19 age groups and the event will run in September prior to the World Squash Championships. Winners will be invited to the World Squash Championships for presentations.


Project (C1) North West Coach Education Courses Legacy development programme activities

Fully subsidised UKCC level one and level two coach education courses have now taken place on 12th and 13th April and 7th and 8th June, with 24 coaches attending in total. All  coaches are involved in supporting local squash programmes and all will receive their certificates at the World Squash Championships.


NATIONAL PROJECTS

Project (A2) England Squash National Schools Championships

The National Schools Championships have successfully taken place with finals held at the National Squash Centre in April. Winners of the National Schools Championships will be invited to receive award presentations at the World Squash Championships.

Project (B2) England Squash Volunteer of the Month Awards

The profile and good work of volunteers is being recognised with Young Volunteer and Senior Volunteer of the month awards being presented by England Squash Area Managers every month. All winners will be recognised at the World Squash Championships.

Project (C2) England Squash Club of the Year Awards

The format for England Squash Club of the Year awards has been set and application forms distributed to all England Squash Charter Clubs. All National Winners will receive their award at the World Squash Championships


Project (D2) England Squash Leisure Centre Affiliation Package

The number of leisure centres and corporate leisure groups affiliating to and working in partnership with England Squash has significantly increased nationwide since January 2008. In the last 6 months, North West based group, Total Fitness have affiliated as a group (24 centres) and have received Racketball and Mini Squash training in Warrington, further individual training programmes have also been delivered in the South East region and London. A total of 60 new centres have affiliated to England Squash as part of this initiative.


Project (E2) Racketball pilot projects

8 Projects have taken place across the country, with pilot business leagues having successfully run in London. Further projects are scheduled to take place in every England Squash region prior to the World Squash Championships in October.


Project (F2) National SqLegacy development programme activitiesuash Week and Volunteers

Planning for National Squash Week is progressing well, with club information packs produced and distributed and over 120 clubs nationwide signed up to take part. The week will run between 29th September and 5th October, with all activities used to raise funds for the nominated charity, Wizz Kids, and also to raise the profile of both squash in local areas and also the World Squash Championships.


Project (G2) Referee / Marking and Young Leader Courses

To date, a total of 5 referee courses, training 50 people and 5 Leaders courses training 56 people have taken place as part of the  World Squash Championships Legacy initiative. Again, successful candidates will be presented with their awards at the World Squash Championships.
